Should there be capital punishment? Most of my friends, my family members all believe there should be capital punishment for those who do heinous crime intentionally. But i believe, there shouldn’t be any form of capital punishment.
Nepal abolished capital punishment in 1990 after popular movement forced then King to announce multi-party democracy and new constitution. But as serious of murders, kidnapping and terror increases, in latest case: a student was kidnapped and killed, Kathmanduties are debating over need of capital punishment to curb such crimes.
People might argue 100 logics for need of capital punishment, but i believe no one has right to take other’s life under any pretext. If there’s capital punishment, then what’s difference between a criminal and state: after all both have blood in their hands though motives are different. Instead other strict punishment measures should be there.
Once capital punishment is executed, there’s no chance to return back to status-quo. What if someone’s innocence is proved later (as no justice system if perfect), can anyone who advocates for such punishment return back a dead person alive?
And also: those for pro-capital punishment says: it would help to curb crime. Has it helped in decrease of crime in India or US or China or Middle East? I don’t think so, still crime rates are higher there. So instead of following an eye for an eye, we should seek for other alternatives where people are punished and rewarded for their deeds.
And remember: AN EYE FOR AN EYE LEAVES EVERYONE BLIND.

hi darkknight,
if we kill someone for a murder he has committed whats the difference between him and us ,instead let him repent his life in jail …..we do not have the right to take life of someone..

Capital Punishment is very rarely awarded in India, and often not even for the most heinous crimes, so one wouldn’t get to see its effects.
That said, I don’t support it at all. I think serious offenders should be locked away in a Chateau d’If type prison where they can lie and rot, in guilt.

I am against Death Penalty. Me too. Not in the name of God though. But for the same reasons you say above.
Btw, habitants of Katmandu are called “katmanduties” ? interesting discovery today !
